The new Cecilia Makiwane Hospital provides level 1 and 2 healthcare services, focused on providing the people of Mdantsane with a state of the art, modern health care facility which is functional in its response to the needs of the community, and also an aesthetic contribution to its surroundings.
The new hospital complex consists of a 500-bed hospital facility (280 level one beds, 162 level two beds and 58 step down beds), a 100-bed psychiatric hospital, staff accommodation and nursing college (1500 students) with student accommodation.
The design of the new hospital challenges the previous traditional paradigm, with emphasis on shorter walking distances and improved observation.
On 8th September 2020 an inspection was conducted at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in East London by Ukuza Con at the request of Facilities Management to assess the parameters of allowance for the installation of new aluminium framed glazing partitioning in line with their needs and requests.
The scope as outlined upon our arrival and tour of the facility was as outlined below:
The replacement of the existing damaged automatic sliding doors at the emergency entrance to the ward with new aluminium double swing doors with a 180° range of motion to allow for opening in any required direction.
Enclosure of a demarcated space in the entrance lobby for use as a preliminary screening area of high risk patients with horizontal sections allowing for mounting of the hospital’s standard dado rail system as well as a sliding door to dimensions that would allow access for all equipment and personnel necessary.
A donning area for use of attendants coming onto shift to equip the necessary dress for use within the ward within a secure and access controlled environment.
A doffing area for use of attendants coming off of shift to remove the soiled attire used within the ward within a secure and access controlled environment.
The works completed are detailed below:
Throughout the course of the project, encompassing both assessment and installation, quality was closely monitored at every step to ensure the delivery of a product that satisfies the requirements of the scope while meeting the high expectations of the Client and Ukuza Con itself.
