DUT LIBRARY COMPLEX
INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of the project is for the renovations to Steve Biko library complex (exterior).
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The renovations to the existing library complex building (Steve Biko Library) are located at the Durban University of Technology, DUT Steve Biko Campus is situated on the Cnr. Of Steve Biko Road and Botanic Gardens Road at co-ordinates 29°51ˈ09 ̎S and 31°0 ̍13 ̎E.
PROJECT INITIATION:
Quality planning and quality control were used continuously to analyze the construction processes of work. Ad Hoc site inspections were conducted on site on a regular basis to ensure:
- That the quality of workmanship was good.
- To resolve technical issues arising on site.
- Occupation Health and Safety audits were conducted monthly throughout the duration of the contract. On the overall, the Contractor adhered to health and safety measures resulting in no serious accidents on site.
Cost control measures were taken in order to finish the project within the allocated budget. Cost reports were compiled monthly and submitted to the client. The contract did not go beyond the Client’s approved budget. The cost overruns identified in the reports were as a result of additional items requested by the client.
The following additional works were covered by the contract budget during the contract period, due to value engineering:
- Existing A/C units removed, serviced and re-installed
- Remove existing solar panel, new brackets, and re-install panels (Energy Technology Station)
- High pressure jet clean & CCTV Inspection – 47 No. of existing fulbore including piping
- Removal of existing roof covering and trusses and replace with new at storeroom
- Roof repairs to existing structural steel roof
With the co-operation received from the client, contractor and all members of the professional team, the project was completed successfully and handed to the client, DUT. The client is satisfied with the professional team as well as the Contractor’s cooperation during the course of the contract period.
