BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
The proposed new High Performance Centre and Sports Academy would be located at the school’s campus on 20 Winterton Walk, Erf 3184 and Erf 3185, Musgrave, Durban. (GPS Coordinates: 29°51’3.59″S, 31° 0’33.90″E)

The brief stipulated an open hall space, multi-purpose rooms, gallery space, offices, meeting rooms, ablutions, kitchen, parking space, the demolition of the existing building and surrounding works and the preparation of the surrounding green space to be used as playfield at break times.

One aspect of education in modern school systems is the provision of physical education to students. Perched in the CBD of Durban where land is a scarce commodity, Sastri College needed a multi-purpose space to supplement the existing spaces used for both mental and physical education. A decision was made to construct a multi-purpose structure to meet these needs.

This would provide students with an upmarket indoor sports facility while at the same time acting as a venue for writing examinations, and other functions outside the realm of school activities. The finished building would also be hired out to the public in order to generate income. The main focus, however, was the provision of space for sports. Hence, the designation “High Performance Centre and Sports Academy”.
