The purpose of the project was to undertake the flood recovery works at St. Mary’s Hospital, as per the works information provided by the Department of Public Works: Kwa-Zulu Natal, as well as the scope that had been approved by HIAC, due to the April 2022 floods that had occurred in KZN.

The brief scope of the project included as follows:

1. Vaccination site

The removal of existing asbestos roof covering and replacement with new roof sheeting. Inspect roof trusses, beams, and purlin to determine if they can be retained or installed anew. Beam filling and patching to walls is included in the scope formulation.

The removal of existing or damaged carpet tiles. Contractor to ensure that when removing floor coverings, the screeds is not damaged i.e., cost of such damages will be borne by the contractor

Repair/Replace existing rainwater goods (gutters and downpipes), and ensure proper integration with storm drainage infrastructure

Refurbishment of building elements (brickwork, plaster, and paint internally, replace damaged ceiling tiles etc. Refurbishment work to entail modifications to the building in order to operate as new OPD site

Inspect, determine if there is damage to electrical installation and repair/replace electrical components.

There is ground floor access to clinical areas by patients at all site levels.

2. OPD area

Repairs of roller shutter blinds complete at the waiting area

3. Chiller room

Remove and replace severely rusted Structural Steel access staircase to Chiller rooms complete with properly designed jointing to affix to main structure in structurally sound manner.

4. Nurses Accommodation

Waterproofing and remedial works to the skylight.

5. External Works

Undertake a geohydrological investigation at existing water well below OPD area carry out appropriate action whether to close off water well or divert it to ensure no future damages to structures and areas around structures e.g., sinkholes etc

Reinstate sand wash-away and repair collapsed palisade fence at rear end of finance building

Repair all sewer, stormwater, and electrical buried infrastructure damaged due to sand wash-away and fence collapse at rear of finance building

Repair all surface runoff stormwater infrastructure around the hospital ensuring integration into the existing storm water infrastructure as far as possible

Ukuza Consulting (Pty) Ltd was appointed as the Turnkey Contractor for the project on the 26th of June 2023. A professional team of consultants were then appointed under the Main Contractor, to facilitate the design and construction of the project. Tabled below are the firms and roles played by members of the team:

Quality planning and quality control were used continuously to analyze the construction processes of work. Monthly meetings were held on site to ensure:

  1.       That the quality of workmanship was good.
  2.       To resolve technical issues arising on site.
  3.       To ensure the scope was being adhered to.

The following additional works were covered by allocated funding during the contract period:

  •         New reception area to be created at the Vaccination Building.
  •         Existing facia boards, barge boards, gutters and downpipes to be removed and replaced with new at the Finance Building.
  •         A trapezoid v-drain is to be constructed at the Finance Building.
  •         Precast paving overlay to screeded courtyard at the Vaccination Building.
  •         Repair sinkhole in paving at Vaccination Building.
